IVF treatment in Abu Dhabi

In-vitro-fertilization (IVF), plays a pivotal role in addressing various fertility challenges.

Dr Salem El Shawarby, a leading expert in reproductive medicine and infertility treatment, stresses the importance of providing compassionate care and support for individuals undergoing IVF treatment in Abu Dhabi.

What is IVF Treatment?

IVF is a fertility treatment involving fertilization of eggs and sperm outside the body. During IVF, eggs are extracted from the ovaries and fertilized with sperms in the IVF  lab.

IVF treatment in Abu Dhabi is recommended for various fertility issues and involves multiple steps to achieve pregnancy.

Why is IVF Done?

IVF in Abu Dhabi is done for several reasons, mainly to help individuals or couples achieve pregnancy when other methods have failed or are not viable.

Here are some common reasons why IVF may be done:

  • Advanced age of the woman
  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine fibroids
  • PCOS or other ovarian conditions

Additionally, IVF allows individuals facing cancer treatment or other health conditions that may affect fertility to freeze eggs or embryos for future use.

What Steps are Performed During IVF Treatment?

The IVF treatment in Abu Dhabi involves several steps:

Fertility medications are prescribed to help stimulate the ovaries to produce a cohort of multiple eggs rather than the single egg that develops each month.

During this step, regular transvaginal ultrasounds and blood tests are performed to monitor the development of the follicles (which contain the eggs) and check hormone levels.

Once the follicles are ready, a minor surgical procedure called follicular aspiration (ovum pick up) is performed under sedation or anesthesia to retrieve the eggs from the ovaries.

With ultrasound guidance, a thin needle is inserted into the ovary through the vagina to retrieve eggs from the follicles. Connected to a suction device, the needle gently removes eggs and fluid from each follicle, one by one.

A semen sample is collected from your male partner

The sample undergoes processing in the lab to separate and select the healthiest and most motile sperm, ensuring optimal quality for fertilization.

The sperm is placed with high-quality eggs in a process called insemination.

They are then stored in a controlled environment where fertilization typically occurs within a few hours. If the chances of fertilization are low, sperm may be directly injected into the egg using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

Fertilized eggs, now called embryos, are cultured in a lab for 3-5 days and monitored for quality and development.

Couples at high risk of passing a genetic disorder can consider pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGT), typically performed 5 days after fertilization by embryo biopsy.

One (or more) healthy embryos are selected and then transferred into the woman’s uterus using a thin catheter. This is a simple procedure and typically does not require anaesthesia.

About 10-14 days after the embryo-transfer, a blood test is conducted to check for pregnancy.

If the pregnancy test is positive, follow-up ultrasounds and tests are scheduled to monitor the progress of the pregnancy. If the test is negative, the couple then discuss the next steps with Dr Salem, to plan further management based on cycle events.

What are the Chances of Success of IVF Treatment in Abu Dhabi?

Here are some key factors that influence the success rates of IVF Abu Dhabi:

  • Woman’s age: Younger women generally have a higher success rate per cycle.
  • Quality of Embryos: The embryo quality is critical for IVF success. Higher-quality embryos have a better chance of implanting and leading to a successful pregnancy.
  • Reproductive History: Women who have been pregnant before, may have a higher chance of success. Those with multiple unsuccessful IVF attempts may have in general lower chances.
  • Cause of Infertility: Certain conditions, such as blocked fallopian tubes or severe male factor infertility, can impact the success of IVF attempts.
  • Lifestyle Factors: Smoking, obesity, excessive alcohol, drug use, high caffeine intake, and certain medications can reduce IVF success and increase miscarriage rates.

What Risks are Associated with IVF?

While IVF can be highly effective in helping individuals or couples conceive, it may also carries certain risks:

  • Emotional and psychological stress
  • Multiple pregnancies (twins or higher order birth) or its associated risks such as preterm delivery
  • Under response (poor response)
  • Over response (OHSS)
  • Ectopic pregnancy (1-3%)
  • Financial costs
